About Jolene Smith

I am an anesthesia-trained pain physician who specializes in diagnosing and treating people with acute, chronic, and cancer-related pain. My anesthesiology training was at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN, followed by a pain medicine fellowship at Mayo Clinic. As a native Midwesterner, I am thrilled to return to the area after earning my medical degree at Des Moines University in 2010.

As part of my pain medicine fellowship, I received training in therapies including joint injections, radiofrequency ablation, spinal cord stimulation, pain pumps, and nerve blocks utilizing both x-ray and ultrasound. I am excited to use these skills to serve patients in the Des Moines area and the surrounding communities. While training at Mayo Clinic, I was fortunate enough to spend 1 month in Scottsdale, Arizona, treating patients who suffered from cancer-related pain. This experience had a profound impact on me as a physician, and I look forward to continuing to work with this patient population in the Des Moines area.

When you meet me, I will take a detailed history and discuss your pain and any previous procedures or treatments with you. This allows me to recommend the best possible treatment for your particular condition. If you or a loved one are suffering from pain, you probably already know that there are many ways to treat pain. Having suffered a sports-related back injury during residency, I understand how much pain can take away from everyday life. Therefore, I am committed to finding the treatment that restores quality of life for my patients.
